Here are two recent children’s book recommendations I made at Browseabout Books. For our teacher friends, these would make excellent additions to your classroom libraries.
Ilona Holland’s children’s book George Washington’s Remarkable Solutions presents an information-rich look at Washington’s innovations and architectural feats at his Mount Vernon estate without shying from the issue of slavery. Holland’s approach melds science with history and focuses upon Washington’s role as planter and innovator, a bit of a departure from the many existing accounts of Washington as a military and political leader.
Holland’s text is approachable for upper elementary grades, and Judy Love’s illustrations provide excellent complements to the research. Nikkolas Smith’s book A Change Is Gonna Come breathes new life into Sam Cooke’s Civil Rights Movement anthem with beautiful and emotionally stunning illustrations. Smith uses paints as Cooke used his music to create a vivid representation of life under Jim Crowe– a very real and human look at the suffering endured by African Americans and the power of hope driving the Civil Rights Movement, a movement for equal and just treatment of every person. Captivating, inspirational, and poignant, this “children’s book” reads more like an experience than a story.
